Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

Right off the bat I give this a 5 out of 5 stars. I was recommended Heartstopper from a friend and I was looking for a quick read to get me out of a little slump that was starting. I adore this read and cannot wait for volume 2 to come out, I need it now.

Here is the synopsis:

Charlie, a highly-strung, openly gay over-thinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, meet at a British all-boys grammar school. Friendship blooms quickly, but could there be something more…?

Charlie Spring is in Year 10 at Truham Grammar School for Boys. The past year hasn’t been too great, but at least he’s not being bullied anymore, and he’s sort of got a boyfriend, even if he’s kind of mean and only wants to meet up in secret.

Nick Nelson is in Year 11 and on the school rugby team. He’s heard a little about Charlie – the kid who was outed last year and bullied for a few months – but he’s never had the opportunity to talk to him. That is, until the start of January, in which Nick and Charlie are placed in the same form group and made to sit together.

They quickly become friends, and soon Charlie is falling hard for Nick, even though he doesn’t think he has a chance. But love works in surprising ways, and sometimes good things are waiting just around the corner…

I love Charlie and Nick, they are so cute and make my black heart just bloom with happiness. Now this is the first time I’ve read anything from Oseman. So I don’t know how her traditional novels are, but I love this graphic novel and now want to read more from her. I plan on picking up Solitaire which I believe is her debut novel. It’s also where Charlie and Nick are first introduce. I need more of them even if it is just a little glimpse.

I love the art and the writing, there is a clear storyline and flows beautifully. I really love when a graphic novel can have a clear storyline without confusing me. Oseman has a nice balance between dialogue and illustrations. I’ve read some graphic novels when the actually illustrations get in the way and there is not enough dialogue. This is not the case with Heartstopper, there is just a beautiful balance. It is also beautifully laid out and really felt like I was along for the story.

If you’re looking for a new graphic novel to get into I totally recommend Heartstopper. If you have read this I would love to hear your opinions.

Happy Reading!!!
