The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

This is the first time reading Samantha Shannon and I will say that the story intrigued me, but it did take me a little bit longer to read than I expected. It’s definitely very much the first in a series. Which sometimes I find can be difficult to get through, but since I was buddy reading it I pushed through. Luckily it paid off in the end. I like it enough to want to pick up the others and see where the rest of the story goes.

So where do I start, Paige Mahoney, is our main character. She is clairvoyant and works for Jax, who is a mime lord. Like most clairvoyants, Paige didn’t know she was one right away. She learned along the way what she could do with the help of Jax and the Seals. Of course, Paige is a powerful and rare clairvoyant, which makes her very valuable. Which in turn makes a lot of people want her. I like Paige though which sometimes a character like her can be a little much, but she actually is a tough character that questions a lot of different things. She also is a tough one and can handle her own. All in all, Paige I can tell may just be a character that I like for a long time to come.

Now, of course, there is a little bit of romance involved, but what I like is that it doesn’t overpower the rest of the story. It’s more of like a teaser. Shannon just gives you enough to see if there will be more. That it just adds to the story, not that it is the story. For me, this is an important factor and one that I appreciate. Not every story needs to be a love story in my opinion.

I will say this, I felt that the chapters were a little too long. Every time I thought I was nearing the end, there was just more. Now, this could just be because my recent reads have had shorter chapters, which in my opinion can make a reader feel like it is really moving along. My favorite thing about the Bone Season is the Seals. I love a story with a ragtag group of characters. Now we don’t get much of the group, I’m hoping for more info in the next books. A character I want more on is Warden. I’ve yet to jump into the fandom since I want to avoid spoilers of any kind. But I also want to jump into the fandom to get more on Warden. But I must stay away until I’m all caught up.

Overall I gave The Bone Season 4 stars and I would recommend if you’re looking for a bit of a dystopian story and a ragtag group.

  1. I agree, I also struggled a bit with the beginning for some reason, and went a bit slower then that I normally would. Bt it is a good story 🙂 I really need to continue this series!
